The Print
“Ward bros. - A Legacy To Maryland” is the winning entry in the 1980-1981 Maryland Contest. This print is one of the limited edition, indicated by the print number. Seventh in the Collectors’ Series of Maryland Stamp prints, the drawing is unique in design and purpose. The first of Maryland to portray a decoy and the first in the medium of colored pencil, as well as the first of any hunting stamp to include the human figure, “Ward Bros.” is the artist’s tribute to Lem and Steve. of Crisfield, Maryland, who pioneered the art of decoy carving.
The Decoy
A Ward Brothers carving of a Pintail duck, the decoy shown in this print is one many balsa birds made by the Wards. Carved in 1948-1949, the wood used for the decoy was a surplus World War II raft. The carving was lent to the artist in 1978 by Robert B, Bowen, M.D. of Cambridge, Maryland, for the original drawing of “Ward Bros.” The decoy is now part of the collection of Robert Richardson, also of Cambridge
